Conscious is defined as:
1. Having an awareness of one's environment and one's own existence, sensations, and thoughts.
2. Capable of thought, will, or perception.
But then the question is, how do you tell if something is conscious. I don't think we can. It's not like you can just ask a sparrow if it is capable of thought. Our language, our lifestyle, the way we are, do not allow us to comprehend what is going on in that tiny little sparrow's brain.
And what is a brain?
The portion of the vertebrate central nervous system that is enclosed within the cranium,
continuous with the spinal cord, and composed of gray matter and white matter. It is the primary center for the regulation and control of bodily activities, receiving and interpreting sensory impulses, and transmitting information to the muscles and body organs. It is also the seat of consciousness, thought, memory, and emotion.
How do we know that the brain is the seat of consciousness? Is it possible to be sentient without one? Think about it. Everything you experience is all just a bunch of electronic signals, correct? And you influence your body by sending out other electronic signals. But where does consciousness come in. Is it simply the ability to understand all of the signals? If so then I humbly propose that humans are not conscious, are not sentient.
But this has me interested in something else. Who am I? Am I the body, or am I the electronic signal? I know that sounds stupid, but just think about it. If I am the body, then there has to be a way to take a dead body and give it energy. Personally, I think that's ridiculous, but everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. So if not the body itself, then consciousness comes from the energy that is inhabiting the body. If that's true, then everything has some form of consciousness, because everything a some form of energy in it, right? I don't know. Maybe consciousness comes from some mixture of vessel and energy. Maybe consciousness is simply a type of energy we don't understand. If so, than our bodies are simply running on this "Soul Power." But then that raises the question of afterlife. Where does the energy go after it leaves our bodies? Does it join up with the rest of the energy in the universe in some sort of pool? Is it possible for the energy to enter something else? Does a fetus have this "Soul Power" as soon as the sperm and egg are created? Or is it infused sometime during conception? Is the energy pool "Heaven," or are we all just fragments of a larger consciousness? Does "God" exist, but is just in a bunch of pieces?
I don't know, but I'm tired and my head hurts so I'm going to bed.
